Getting Out of Your Comfort Zone

Keeping physically fit can be demanding and time consuming.  At times it can also be tedious.  This usually happens when we find ourselves doing the same fitness routine over and over.  It doesn’t matter if you’re lifting heavy weights, running on a treadmill, or doing cardio-kickboxing, all routines can become stale if you don’t mix it up.

The first thing you have to do is get out of your comfort zone.  If it’s easy  and you’re used to it, then you’re probably not stimulating your mind or your body.  Learning new exercises is a great way to keep your training fresh.  While repetitive training can leave you feeling dull and mentally drained.

When you train the same way all the time, your body adapts to your training and as time goes by your body will show little if any progress.  You might ask about professional athletes who virtually train the same way all the time.  Most professional athletes, especially those who are in peak condition, for example Olympic athletes, train for around 10-14 hours a day, not 4-8 hours a week.  Their bodies have to adapt and grow simply by the sheer number of hours that they train.  Your body doesn’t have to endure that sort of demanding schedule.  Putting in 10 hours a week of the same tired routines won’t produce the results that you’re looking for.

Changing you routine doesn’t have to be radical.  You don’t have to climb Mount Everest or run a marathon to stimulate growth.  You can swim for a few laps instead of running on a treadmill.  You can switch from free weights to fitness machines or you can use Pilates to completely shake up your routine.  Just as you know what exercises you’ve been doing, you probably know what exercises you haven’t been doing.  Step out of your comfort zone and step up your fitness game.

Getting out of your zone and trying new exercises requires courage and determination.  But adding multiple routines to your training regimen will help stimulate your mind body connection and you’ll see results like never before.
