This Week Jill Bleazard Smith Discusses:
Fitness Clubs across America are filled with men and women working towards various goals. Most of these people are doing intense exercises to further their goals, but many are limiting themselves by an unconscious fear of “the Gym.”
Many men will laugh at the thought of them fearing anything in the gym. The laughing stops when you ask them to take a Zumba class. The same goes for many women who absolutely refuse to go anywhere near the dumbbells or weight machines. Today in part 1, I’ll discuss the men and their fears.
“I’ll look stupid.”
“It’s not for men.”
“I’ll burn muscle.”
“I’m not coordinated enough”
“I’ll be the only guy.”
These are excuses – not valid reasons to avoid Zumba classes. Contrary to what you may think, many women also had to overcome certain fears, but let’s address these excuses.
“I’ll look stupid.” Many class members had this fear, but they eventually realized that the other class members are focused solely on what they’re doing and they’re not there critiquing other members. Also, most class members are sympathetic and respectful to all new members and don’t care if you wear a Batman costume, at long as you have the courage to take the class.
“It’s not for men.” When you go a dance club don’t you see both men and women all over the dance floor? Think of Zumba as fitness dancing, it’s not gender specific. Also with Zumba you don’t have to be a good dancer, you just have to have the heart and the willingness to try something new.
“I’ll burn muscle.” Zumba is cardio just like the treadmill and the elliptical, the only difference is that Zumba is more fun and more engaging. Cardio of any kind does not burn muscle. Dieting and not getting enough protein in your diet is what causes muscle loss, so unless you plan on cutting your protein intake, Zumba will not burn away your muscles.
“I’m not coordinated enough.” If you can walk up a flight of stairs carrying a bottle of water then you’re coordinated enough for Zumba.
“I’ll be the only guy.” Is this a legitimate reason for any man to avoid an activity, especially exercising with a room full of women? Think of it like this, more and more men are discovering the benefits of Zumba, but even if you are the first man in the class, are you a leader or a follower? Do you have to wait for another man to lead before you can follow?
Don’t fear the gym, take advantage of all the areas of training, and enjoy everything your fitness club has to offer.
